I had a dream about this particular scene, and it made me think that MacMurphy could have waited to leave the hospital. He could have hidden the keys he stole from Mr. Turkle into his pockets or maybe even his underwear, and he could have waited until nighttime to leave the hospital. Maybe MacMurphy could have gotten one of the other patients to distract the night guard there, so that he could unlock the screen on the window and then climb out. (And yes, I know a patient escaping a mental hospital would have been wrong, but I couldn't blame MacMurphy one bit given that mean, old, nasty nurse.) If only MacMurphy weren't so daggone impulsive, Nurse Ratched wouldn't have called Mr. Washington to deal with MacMurphy and Billy Bibbit would not have been left alone and therefore would not have committed suicide. Waiting to leave the hospital also would have prevented MacMurphy from choking Nurse Ratched out, which would have also prevented him from being sedated and therefore would have prevented the Chief from killing him later. If only MacMurphy had waited to escape the hospital until a time when Nurse Ratched and those three orderly men of hers were not around, the outcome would have been a lot less catastrophic than it was. #Justmythoughts.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's next. What a sh*t piece of a movie. No characters except the lead character are believable. It seems that the story, oh pardon, there is no story,the scenes are written only considering one character and all other characters are woven around him. And when I say him, it reminds me that this movie is very disgraceful to the women. The head nurse Ratched is shown pure evil and oppressive to the patients from the starting till the end. There is no development of her character. Then, there is Cindy, who is in the movie just to be the arm candy of McMurphy. I could handle this much sh*t, but then she slept with Billy just because McMurphy said so. Writers, please write believable characters. Okay, the crazy ones' characters are unexplainable and non-relatable, but Cindy, why there is no character development of hers? The only good thing about this movie is the acting of Jack Nicolson. Even he could do a lot better.

Ken Kesey was just brilliant is so many other ways too! Also look up definition of “lark”, the name of the boat at the end. One flew over the cuckoo's nest setting. I read the book as well. It was better, but the movie was good. It was fun seeing psychotics together adjusting. It was fun seeing them revolt. Every character had their own personality to them. They were very well written. The ending is really sad.

I can't really add to all the good reviews here, except for one thing. As far as I understood it, this movie was not just a comment on 1950's psychiatry, but also an allegory of life under communism in Chechoslovakia. Next to the direct police oppression there was obviously a lot of 'mind control' going on as well.
This reading explains some of the 'goofs' noted about this film, the most important being that when McMurphy wakes up after the Christmas- party, it seems to be spring outside. This refers to the Prague spring. The Prague Spring obviously led to the full scale invasion of the Soviet Union of Chechoslovakia, analogous to 'the institution' the Chief refers to it as The Combine in the book) invading' McMurphy's brain by lobotomizing it. Another hint is Martini (Danny DeVito) saying 'hovno' in the card game at the end, which is Slovak for 'shit. Since the original novel is an American novel written in 1959, I'm guessing Forman put this in for a reason.
I point this out because I just watched this together with a Slovak lady, and apparently, amongst Slovaks and Chechs alike it's kind of common knowledge that the movie is also about Chechoslovakia (and it's also still about the horrors of mental institutions, obviously.
